Today's show was mostly about East Jesus. I painted one of the people I met there onto the canvas of Salvation Mountain and I think the painting is massively improved! Click here to listen to the show, I had fun managing to prattle on the entire hour, got some good painting done and the audio is not too bad! The first 40 seconds of the show I had no idea it was going so it's silence, but don't worry your computer's fine, I get a clue about 45 seconds in... at 16 minutes I start to do something on the canvas, and the last 20 minutes of the show I start getting into it. I painted very cool skin tones on the girl, too cool that she felt almost blue, I wanted it that way but I also wanted to make her look warmer so I painted a more blue sky and that solved that. There's always more than one way to solve a problem.

Miracle Mile

This painting started off monochrome, the second pass was color. I did this a few weeks back but I never got around to a blog post about it. Here you go! If you want to see, it's at the Charlie James gallery in Chinatown. He also has this one, this one, and this one. Seeing these paintings makes me want the People to get mad again! aahahahah!

East Jesus

Nathan, founder of the Hive and avid camper, was the spearhead for an overnight camp-out in East Jesus, which has to be the one of the most amazing places on earth. An artistic self-sustaining oasis in the desert, basecamp liberty. There was food, solar power, live music. I did a couple drawings of the band playing in the music area, my favorite was a group called Orphan in the Afterlife The next morning I went and made a painting of Salvation Mountain, an epic monument to faith and perseverance. Not bad, but my piece definitely needs another coat of paint, that means I gotta go back soon! I was there for 28 hours total, but it seemed longer in a good way, probably because there were so many amazing experiences in so little time. East Jesus proves time doesn't always fly when you're having fun!

333 Hope St

Now it's starting to look like something's happening, I'm not sure if it says zombies yet, but I like how it's looking so far! I had fun doing some major shifting of the composition from the first attack started on location, I'm pushing the local color distinctions and the warm/cool light and shadow. And of course adding the gathering crowd at B of A Plaza! Maybe this is turning into something like a scene from Frankenstein. zombies

I got a weird idea to paint a zombie attack streaming out of the Bank of America tower and terrorizing the populace. I went to 333 Hope St with my sketchbook and made a drawing based on what I saw being there and then with perspective and imagination I made the vantage point look like from above and added the zombies! I blocked in the painting on location, sans zombies, but plan to add them soon and take it back on location. It's a statement! I did the Alex Schaefer Hour when I was painting on location so here's a link to that; I haven't listened to it but hopefully the audio is ok!

Here's another plein air painting from San Francisco. This is the view from Alamo Square, probably the most photographed view in the city! It's a view of "the Painted Ladies" looking east toward the financial district. the Knight of Pentacles

For the annual Hive Gallery tarot card I was asked by Catherine Kaleel to collaborate on a painting of the Knight of Pentacles. What fun! This painting never would have happened otherwise and I love how it came out. The show opens tonight and is up all month, and the Knight is for sale! Here's a large image of the painting completed, and a bunch of work in progress shots of the evolution of the piece. Catherine really wanted to paint the horse, so I started off composing a landscape that would work around whatever ended up in the center, it was invented from a smudged old drawing that I let my imagination loose on. Then Catherine built the panel from scratch, I laid in the landscape in pastel and acrylic, then handed it off, the horse was added and Catherine added beautiful clouds, and stronger color to the landscape and water and the house and mill, then it was back to me and I added the knight and a final layer of paint and we both completed the pentacle. oil on panel, 30 by 20

San Francisco

I went with artist Catherine Kaleel on a quick trip to San Francisco. I've never painted there before so it was great to go with someone who really knows the town. It's such an amazing city! Very dramatic lighting and geography. The city was blessed with perfect sunny, mild weather which I've been told is not always the case. But it was an amazing time to paint! CHASE FREEDOM

Here is my impression of the activities of the "primary dealer" banks, i.e. JPMorganChase, Bank of America, ad nauseum, since I can remember. This is the debauchery of undeserved privilege and awarding the unproductive. Jamie Dimon calls this success.

Regarding this painting you can see from the Artillery Magazine article that it's changed, i.e. pentimenti! I got rid of the lettering and raised the beer funnel. I did a little 10 by 10 inch painting for a show next year, they wanted something small, plein air, and from Eagle Rock, my favorite part of town and the best strip of route 66 left in LA! And square compositions are always their own challenge; and it's interesting to paint this small size because it's easier to abstract "what you see" into "big" blocks of color. oil on linen

I've been painting a lot of cupcakes on the side, I have a commission to paint a bunch and I owe a couple to friends; at some point in the near future I will post a whole slew of these tasties. back on The Board

It was lovely and overcast all day today, perfect weather for my 'studio'. I felt the desire to put more paint on this big one I'm calling The Board. It's been moving big shapes around to be more accurate but not narrowing in on any "detail" yet. It feels more 'right' but not more realistic. My palette so far is mostly burnt umber and ultramarine with touches of burnt sienna and dioxazine purple and focusing on the desaturated grey range; but with these pigments and the addition of yellow ochre I could paint a most lovely renaissance rainbow! oil on canvas, 48 by 60

the Housing Market

This is a painting started in 2004 and finished in 2011. It's from a series of five, three I finished back then and had them nicely framed. The last two had been stored in the garage all this time until I found them a few weeks ago. As you can see from the photo, I've cut 30% off the painting (much like home prices lately) and restretched the remaining portion, planted a for sale sign, and am finishing it off. I think it needs a gaudy gold frame with the scrap tacked next to it on the wall. oil on canvas, 24 by 30

It was a beautiful day in Venice Tuesday so I went out to paint the Chase branch there. An art gallery owner in Los Angeles is taking one of my burning bank paintings to the madness that is the Art Basel Miami show so I got inspired to paint a couple new ones before he leaves for that, like the Miracle Mile piece, but I realized they would be too wet to go and he's in love with the Los Feliz painting so that's the one. monochrome to color

I've stayed in acrylic on this number to keep the drying time fast, but still laying it down fast enough in each attack to stay "wet into wet". I'm working in established "old master" stages, b/w, then limited palette, then full color, etc... so far I'm half way there? This one has had three full corner to corner layers of paint, wet over dry, leading to a rich paint surface. Still work in progress but I'm into it! One thing I learned today is nothing is too big to fail! ahhahahah! Like my recent ebay auction. wtf? I think it was a great painting and a steal at $875 but not a single bid. The art world is capricious and I will never try to understand it. No less than Rembrandt died broke, patronless, studentless, and without a single commission. What are you gonna do?!?!
I went painting 20 minute live portraits today! That's what I did. I was at the Artillery magazine booth at the Patchwork art and craft fair at the Helms Bakery building. It was a sell-out event, which lifted my spirits! I brought seven canvases thinking that was way more than I'd need, and ended up selling every single one and could have sold more! here's a group shot, unfortunately not the best photos... each oil on canvas, 12 by 9

I started this painting on 11-11-11, a good luck number day! I went out to Wilshire Blvd, found this great vantage from a park across the street and setup to paint this somewhat odd Chase building. occupy LA

Zuma Dogg, the OG Occupier of LA, has caused the scales to drop from my eyes. Here is an amazing clip of him on a free speech rampage today in city council chambers, after public comment and the city council, for some reason, went into closed session. He perfectly articulates how trickle down fraud takes form on the local level, from DC to LA.

I'm starting to feel that "Wall St" is a strawman, a scapegoat. Occupy LA does not need to look to New York for fraud, theft, corruption, waste, and greed, it's happening right here in Los Angeles City Council chambers. The fraud takes place on different levels, from federal to local, but it happens in much the same way all over.

I think the only place you can really make any sort of impact in on the local level. Occupy Your City Council! It is people and speech like this that will plug up the holes, prosecute the criminals, and begin to fix the system! I humbly genuflect to zuma dogg.

Zuma Dogg, the ORIGINAL Los Angeles Occupier, was at City Hall Friday and did an amazing job of showing the weaknesses and hypocricies of the protest. They are basically sitting in for the right to sit in and the city is letting it happen while in the meantime the fraud, waste, and corruption goes on. This November 5th marks a nationwide movement to get people to withdraw their money from a "Too Big To Fail" banking institution and deposit that money into a community bank or credit union . The official website is moveyourmoneyproject.org. Sometimes protest can seem a little vague, or maybe it's something you can't or won't do for whatever reason, but moving your money from a TBTF bank to a local bank or credit union that operates their business fairly, legally, and morally and doesn't engage in, for instance, mortgage securities fraud, then that would be an action that would make a real and tangible statement about what you think of corruption on Wall Street.

By the way, in case you're interested, I didn't choose to deposit my money into a credit union, instead I chose a local bank that serves and makes loans to the immediate community, wasn't involved in mortgage securities fraud, or is over leveraged. I believe it to be a right-sized small bank that operates safely and in the interest of their customers.

Attacking Coke is a symbolic show of force. Wall Street thinks they are the masters of the universe who own the politicians. To those who think that the Occupy Coke idea is "anti-capitalist", I say the environment on Wall St. is not "free-market" capitalism, rather it's "rigged-market" capitalism. If Wall Street can use high-frequency trading super computers to manipulate the stock market for their own gain, then the People en masse can boycott a high-profile product to manipulate the market just to make the statement that "we're here guys and we're upset with the game you've been playing"

Here's a short video and a shot of the painting in progress that I worked on today at Occupy LA! It is an amazing and ongoing movement sparking open dialogue of the ills in our nation and our world. There's some poor audio in some of the video but it's a grass roots effort so forgive me! Down with crony-capitalism. Down with corporatism. Down with "too big to fail". Down with rigged-market capitalism. Down with bailouts and corporate welfare. Force the Federal Reserve System under the authority of congress and the treasury and for the first time audit them. End the Federal Reserve cartel on what is "legal tender". End wars, not social programs and make the health care "industry" a not-for-profit system! I really feel these are all things that need to come to fruition if there is to be justice and empathy in the world.

I spent Columbus Day lashing more paint on my work in progress protest painting of the LA Federal Reserve building in flames. I really hope that Occupy LA gets together and makes a march down Spring to rally around this place. To me this institution is the great great grandaddy of all bad banks in America and has evolved over the last 40 years into a global cancer. They have built an empire out of paper, exotic financial instruments, empty promises and debt. That's why it's so easy for me to paint it on fire

Here's a few minutes from today at the corner of Spring and Temple, the north lawn of City Hall for occupy LA. Instead of bringing my art supplies, I brought my sign and waved it around. It's essentially a painting on a stick (a stretcher bar), and like some of my paintings there's history and complexity to the physical surface from countless different changes of messages that have been painted, buffed out, repainted, buffed out, etc. I hope to see EVERYONE there on Saturday! No true Angelino would miss this

yesterday was the start of Occupy Los Angeles, a protest in sympathy with Occupy Wall Street in New York. It was peaceful and I was blown away by the attendance which was well over 1500 people! I was by this morning dropping off supplies for a friend who was camping and there was a huge hard core group there still! wow. I plan to keep visiting, maybe even camp myself? It could be a Hive gallery excursion! I am still blown away. I have more videos and photos so I will keep updating this post. In the meantime here are some photos and a short video uploaded from my phone.

Yesterday was a relatively bug-free episode of the Alex Schaefer Hour at the Hive gallery on coagula.com. It was an "automatic composition" experiment using randomness to find order. I made rubbings on paper off the floor of the Hive gallery and then used that to spark my imagination. My intention was to see a riot take shape, but I could have just as easily chosen to see a rave dance party take shape! I'm sewing up loose ends on this one and adding a 'for sale' sign. There might be more additions, and there's always the chance of fire breaking out, but at the moment I think less says more. I'm sure there's meaning in the history of this painting. I started a series of these tract homes in 2004 when very few people were foreseeing that we'd end up where we are now, so I think it's appropriate to find these unfinished works, in the middle of an economic meltdown caused in large part by bad business practices in mortgages and housing, and paint 'for sale' signs on the lawn. Bank owned. Forclosure. Here's a close-up shot.

I went through my garage today after teaching and found a couple of choice "works in progress". What a great surprise, it's like I unknowingly left myself a gift from the past. I started five of these in 2004, nearly the beginning of the housing bubble now wreaking havok around the world, and finished three at the time and they turned out great, but then once I had a tryptic I petered out on the other two. But now that I've stumbled across these I feel like they need something? What do you think it needs? What could it be? what? ahahahahahah! I'll be jumping on these tomorrow! I love painting. day of rage?

I heard on the internet that today was a "Day of Rage" around the country so I wanted to go out and make a painting. For some reason, the Los Angeles protest was to be at Olvera St which is actually a lovely part of town. I thought painting the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve Bank was more appropriate but amazingly I was the only person there engaged in any form of protest so I felt a little let down by that... Today was like when I recently painted in Pasadena, people were recognizing me and talking about the story, a new experience for me. At 4pm Homeland Security pulled up and I went through the whole deal again, this time with Federal agents. I find it hard to believe but they said this or another building was threatened with fire tomorrow. So they asked for my ID, another incident report was filled out and they took a photo of the painting. I'm glad they didn't mind me photographing them as well. Here's a poorly shot and poorly edited video by your truly but it gives you a good feel for painting on the street. Part 'day in the life', part art lesson, part episode of COPS. here's a shot of the painting, it's still work in progress but a good start with an ugly subject! oil on canvas, 30 by 24

In reading all the articles and comments online I think the best one I have gotten was someone pointing out that by selling the paintings which I created to Europe I have actually reduced the trade deficit by $25,200 which is more than the politicians in DC have done in years! good point! I was on LETS'S PAINT TV yesterday, you can watch the show here: Let's Paint TV. Click that link and watch! I was late and the show didn't get rolling until like 15 minutes when we figured out my mic problems, but I got some good painting done, it's always invigorating to work with another artist. I took an old plein air that I'd done when once was allowed to paint INSIDE the Glendale Galleria. The piece never sold but for some reason again I kept it and I thought it was the perfect image to "set on fire". The symbolic fire of economic havok casued by bad banking practices is spreading to retailers! RUN!! But noone seems to be running yet... it's needs some more painting time on it, but the piece is 1000% more interesting now. oil on canvas, 24 by 36

pasadena plein air

I went out this morning to start a burning bank that I've had my eye on in Pasadena. It was a different experience today then other plein air outings because 5 people recognized me from all the publicity, came up, gave me compliments and thumbs up and posed for pictures. One guy, who said he works in finance and is a self-described "capitalist pig", gave me the biggest kudos of all! Amazing!! Here's a few shots from the location and the painting so far. I revisited a painting from this series that was work in progress. I love to let a painting get good and dry and then jump on it and whip it into shape... I have found this series to be controversial subject matter and I'm never sure why. I think lots of people have lots of fond memories of the 80's, and so do I... but you gotta admit that a lot of it was pretty fucked. What a day! live painting at the Hive

Yesterday was the opening show at the Hive. It was a low key crowd, likely the labor day weekend and burning man combined. I used the opening as an excuse to get some painting done. Here's a shot of a work in progress. This was a random internet Chase branch submission so I didn't know where it was, but the web has stepped up and I have learned this is in Ohio! I plan to paint some more on it and get a better photo, but it's still blog post worthy... UPDATE here's how the piece looks after a little work at home... it has sort of a luminous Thomas Kinkade-y look to it...

Here's how I'm pricing the piece: In 1873 one French franc equalled .290322581 g grams of gold. Legend has it that Vincent Van Gogh sold one painting in his lifetime, the Red Vineyard at Arles, for 400 francs, which would have equalled 116.129 grams of gold, or 4.1 ounces of gold. Today an ounce of gold costs $1835, so 4.1 ounces of gold is $7523.50. Not a bad price adjusted for inflation and given the amount of money his work auctions for nowadays quite a steal! I'm going to auction this painting on e-bay, it's just "too hot" not to! I've been getting offers and I think this is the most democratic and frankly interesting way to monetize this artwork. I'm going to float this painting on the open market and engage in a little real-world price discovery. And I'm going to be setting the auction starting bid at the cost of just a half an ounce of gold in today's prices, or $920.

John "Mr. Let's Paint TV" Kilduff was our guest. I think you all can probably imagine what all we were talking about. I did a portrait of John during the interview and at a certain point I painted his head on fire... it was an experiment and John informed me that his actual head did not feel hot at all! So we learned that painting something on fire doesn't actually raise the temperature of the object being painted whatsoever. I'm relieved! After the show John and I went out for a little, old-fashioned plein air painting! Good times and a beautiful day to do it. This piece still feels a little bit "work in progress" but I think it's a good looking block-in
